RECENT WORK

All the instruments on my other pages I regard as "old work".  My tastes haven't changed too much, but my chops have gotten a lot better, so I wanted to segregate the new work from the old.  To be honest, there hasn't been a lot of new stuff.  It isn't much fun to build instruments on weekends after spending 40 hours doing the same thing for someone else during the week.  But I guess I'm a junkie of sorts, and it isn't easy to leave it alone.

MUZON'S DREADNOUGHT

Sitka Spruce and Brazilian Roswood

Though it's hard to tell here, this Brazilian rosewood is a sister set to the one in Mark's OM.  The wood is so dark it's hard to pick up the nice color without strong light.

The binding is a South American wood called Pau Amarillo.

Walnut and sycamore Weissenborn

Weissenborn made Hawaiian guitars from the teens of the 20th Century up until about 1938.All Weissenborns were made completely of koa.  The sides also tapered toward the tail end until they were less than an inch deep at the nut.  By keeping the sides full depth for the entire length of the instrument the guitar is stiffened, internal capacity is increased, and it sits flatter and more stabile on the lap.

This guitar sounds rich and warm through the entire scale.  Clearly, other woods than koa can make a fine lap steel guitar. The fingerboard and bridge are made of an African wood called wenge. The rest of the instrument is made of New  Jersey walnut and sycamore.
